Revitalizing Victorian Homes on Governors Island
Project type
Studio Design I
Date
Fall 2023
Location
Pratt Institute
This project focuses on revitalizing 14 Victorian-style homes on Governors Island, NYC, by preserving their historical and architectural value while introducing necessary modifications to meet contemporary needs. The approach emphasizes material reuse, waste reduction, and cost efficiency, creating a balance between historic preservation and modern functionality. The design centers around ornamental elements, transparency, and fluidity, resulting in a building that is both visually striking and practical.
The structural system was reimagined as an opportunity for ornamentation, with thoughtful placement of structural elements to create intricate patterns and shapes. This approach allows the building to function not only as a space but also as a work of art. The use of transparent materials like glass integrates natural light, enhancing the building’s sense of openness and fostering a seamless connection between its interior and exterior. This transparency strengthens the fluidity of the design, ensuring a harmonious integration with its surroundings.
